Bookstore 101 Series

How do I save money on textbooks?

  1. Buy used books and save 25%.
-Used books are 25% cheaper than new.
  2. Sell that same book back to us at buyback time.
-If the book is ordered by a CSU professor you’ll receive 50% of the new retail price.
-If the book isn't ordered by a CSU professor, but is needed anywhere in North America, a used book wholesaler may still offer you a percentage of the new retail price, depending on demand.
-The demand for used books usually exceeds the availability. However, from time to time the Bookstore will have all the books it needs of a particular title. When this happens, the wholesaler will still offer you a percentage of the new retail price and ship it to where it’s needed in North America.
-And remember: whether you buy a book new or used, you can still mark it up and really use it while you study. This does not affect the value at buyback time.
  3. Buying and selling used books is smart because:
    - You save money when you buy
    - You make money when you sell
    - You help other students save money
    - You help the CSU Bookstore lower prices
    - You recycle!

What is a custom coursepack, how does it work and how does it save money?

Your professor personally selects relevant material from a variety of sources to enhance your studies. Instead of having you buy a number of different books or photocopy a ton of journal articles, the professor chooses only the information that you’ll really need. This saves you money and it also saves you time running around trying to find and copy all the necessary readings. The Bookstore researches and pays the copyright fees, organizes the material and prints it on campus. This also saves you time and money. In order to keep costs as low as possible, the store does not print any more than what will sell. If you go to the shelf and find that your custom courseware is sold out - don’t panic! Just fill out the rain-check form, pay the cashier, and we’ll print a copy for you. Keep your receipt in order to claim your copy in a couple of days. There are unfortunately no refunds on custom courseware (even if you drop your class). Copyright law does not permit it - so make sure you need it before you buy it. The bottom line is custom coursepacks are a valuable education tool and it’s a cheaper alternative to buying several traditional texts. Think about the benefits: - You won’t have to spend hours photocopying reserve articles. - You won’t end up buying a bunch of books just because a couple of chapters are important. - You’ll pay for only what you really need and use in class. - You’ll be on the legal side of the law. Your custom courseware is available at your Colorado State University Bookstore!

How does the Bookstore determine the price of a textbook and can I find it cheaper somewhere else?

The CSU Bookstore works to provide you with the right book, at the right time, and at the best possible price. The CSU Bookstore is owned and operated by Colorado State University. All course books are priced based on what publishers charge plus a mark-up to cover salaries and other obligations CSU must pay to CSU (rent, improvements, etc.) Therefore the price of the book is what it costs to get the book to you. The CSU Bookstore is as competitive as it can be, but obviously can’t sell a book for less than what it costs. If you think you’ve found your coursebook cheaper somewhere else, there are a few things to consider: Are there shipping and handling charges? Is the price in US or foreign currency? Are there custom and duty charges? Is the book available now when you need it? Or will you waste valuable time before the book is actually in your hands. If your class is canceled or you drop the course, what will happen? If you decide within 2 weeks that you don’t want the book , will you be able to get a refund? If you need to return the book , are there any restocking fees? Will you have to pack up the book and pay return mailing charges? Are you able to get the book used or do they only sell it new? And once you’ve finished with the book, will you be able to it sell back for up to 50% of what you paid for it?

It’s the first week of classes and my book is not on the shelf. Where is my book?

The Bookstore has 90-98% of all required texts on the shelf at least two weeks before the start of classes. If your book is not here, it’s usually outside the control of the Bookstore. Any known information about your missing book is printed on the "shelf talker" located where your book should be. In order of frequency, the reason your book is not on the shelf is: The publisher is out of stock The book is out of print or not yet printed. The requisition for the book was received late from the professor or the department. During this time, the Bookstore continues to check regularly with the publisher, inform the professor and department about the status of your missing book, and post any known information on the shelf talker and on the availability list. The Bookstore apologizes for any inconvenience to you that is beyond our control.
